Photovoltaic  Industry

  1. India has 9 manufacturers of solar cells and Module producers but India is lacking in the manufacturing of the wafer and government is promoting that king of industries. And now in India most of the solar cells are of crystalline silicon but India is trying to implement thin film module production lines.
  2. Key challenges in PV industry are huge investment vs Returns and when compared to non renewable energy like normal Current from Water, lack of R&D and lack of Solar PV knowledge.
  3. India’s Action Plan on Climate Change (2008) --One of the Mission in that plan is to produce 1000MW per Annum by 2017 .
  4. Government Incentive Package Scheme Details  :
  1. Rs.15 per kWh, tariff guarantees cease at the end of 10 yrs from the start of
      Generation.
  1. Capacity cap of 50MWp by 2012 for incentive scheme.
  1. Expansion of PV applications to rural electrification and lighting through solar home electrification systems, PV irrigation pump sets on a large scale, in Power back-ups for cellular base stations across country, house hold power backups.
  2. With country’s rising energy  needs  were more than 50% of the power generation in India is by coal and which is non renewable source .Over 100 million families rely on kerosene for domestic lighting which would deplete very soon.
  3. Key PV Applications :
  1. About 70% of India’s population(450 Million)  is not using the Grid electricity and estimated 80,000 villages are not connected to grid power .
      8. Biggest draw back of Large Scale PV Power Plants is the Initial Investment of about 200
Million per 1 MWp which is huge amount when compared to Power plants by Thermal
Power (1 Million)  and Nuclear Plant (2 Million ).
9.Most of the Solar PV generation plants are of 2.12MWp
